The Beginning starts the series, “The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls.” It’s a chapter book series for young middle grade that takes kids back in time to watch a Bible event–in this case, Creation.
Peter, age 9, and his sister Mary, age 10, tag along after their dog Hank who is bent on mayhem while they are visiting with a great-uncle. Their parents are conveniently in Africa.
It is Hank who uncovers a basket of ancient scrolls in Uncle Solomon’s library. These are no ordinary scrolls: they glow. And they’re sealed with red wax. Uncle Solomon explains that he found the legendary “hidden scrolls.” Only the chosen ones can break the seal and travel back in time, and he’s personally not chosen. He tried it.
An adventure ensues, of course. With the help of Hank, Peter and Mary accidentally break the seal. Whisked back in time, they hear God speaking and see the things he is calling into being. They meet Michael and the evil snake.
But to get home, they need to solve a riddle on the scroll. It’s not easy. Are they stuck in the past?
I think this book would be a great discussion starter for your family. It contains a summary of the Fall of Man, in kid-sized form. It’s short and very easy to read, aimed at grades 1-3. This book was published in 2017, and now a whole series backs it up, The Secret of the Hidden Scrolls.
Five stars.
